Pleomorphic adenoma is a non-cancerous tumor of the salivary gland, which is rare. It is also known as a benign neoplasm. This tumor develops in any salivary gland – mouth, neck or throat and is the most common tumor of the parotid gland.
Causes of Pleomorphic adenoma
Salivary gland tumors are rare, considering less than 10 percent, of all head and neck tumors. It’s not been cleared what actually causes Pleomorphic adenoma or salivary gland tumors. But it is clear that Pleomorphic adenoma occurs when the number of cells in a salivary gland develops alterations in their DNA. These alterations permit the cells to grow and multiply rapidly. Mutated cells will grow and when other cells would die. The accumulating cells form a tumor that can invade nearby tissue. These cancerous cells break down and spread to distant areas of the body.
Risk Factors of Pleomorphic adenoma
Factors that can increase the risk of Pleomorphic adenoma include:
- Age – Pleomorphic adenoma can occur at any age but more often in older adults.
- Radiation exposure – Radiation used to treat head and neck cancers can also increase the risk.
- Drinking alcohol and smoking, or chewing tobacco.
- Diet: High intake of animal fat but a very low intake of vegetables and fruits.
- Genetic or hereditary factors.
Symptoms of Pleomorphic adenoma
Signs and symptoms of a salivary gland tumor may comprise:
- A lump or swelling on or near the area of jaw, neck or mouth
- Lack of sensation or numbness in any part of the face
- Muscle frailty on one side of the face
- Perpetual pain in the area of a salivary gland
- Dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing
- Trouble opening your mouth widely
Diagnosis of Pleomorphic adenoma
Tests and procedures used to diagnose pleomorphic adenoma include:
- A physical examination: Examining the jaw, neck, and throat for any lump or swelling.
- Imaging tests. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) may help to determine the size and location of the salivary gland tumor.
- Sample of tissue for testing. Collecting a sample of tissue (biopsy) by inserting a needle into the suspicious area and drawing out fluid or cells, for laboratory testing to determine if the tumor is cancerous.
Treatment of Pleomorphic adenoma
Treatment depends on the type, size and stage of the benign salivary gland tumor as well as the patient’s overall health and preferences. Benign salivary gland tumor treatment most commonly involves, chemotherapy, and surgery, whether it’s, with radiation therapy or without radiation therapy. But surgery can develop various side effects such as numbness and weakness, loss of sensation in the tongue, sweating on face during meals, a problem with moving the lower lip and in closing the eyes, etc. Surgery may also increase the risk of infections.
So it is better to adopt the alternative treatment for the prevention and cure of Pleomorphic adenoma. Ayurveda is the best alternative treatment for this. Ayurveda provides various herbs that treat Pleomorphic adenoma naturally without causing a side effect. These herbs are used to prepare herbal formulations.
