Moonshine Still – The Working Principle Of The Distiller!

0

On the surface, the Moonshine distiller is basically an apparatus which is designed to create a homemade mash whiskey called “moonshine.” The distiller got such an interesting name from the necessity to run distilling operations under cover of darkness, ideally when the moon is full. Another fact is that the cool night air also helps with the distillation process, as the vapor will be converted back into liquid form. Nowadays, one can find a number of different design variations on the basic moonshine still. But how does it work? This post, on behalf of moonshine-still, will address to the working principle of the Moonshine still. So, let’s take a look at them.

Distiller!Moonshine Still – The Working Principle Of The

  • First the corn is ground into meal. Nowadays, some moonshiners employ commercial hog feed since it’s mostly made of corn.
  • After that the corn meal is soaked in hot water in the still. Sometimes even sugar is added (or even used instead of grain), however, the traditional moonshiners added malt to convert the starch in the corn meal into sugar. After that the yeast is put in which will start the fermentation process. This mixture is actually called mash which is stirred thoroughly and heated for a set amount of time in the still.
  • Also, the stone furnace beneath the still is heated up to about 172 degrees Fahrenheit (78 C).
  • In this process the alcohol evaporates. As pressure will build in the still, the alcohol steam is actually forced through the cap arm to the pipe that leads out of the top of the still.
  • In some moonshiners, one can see the use of a thump keg, which is simply a heated barrel into which the steam is forced. It is seen that some solid material from the mash usually comes along with the steam, this where the thump keg helps.
  • Next in the process, the steam will travel into the worm, a coiled length of pipe that wind down the inside of the worm box. This worm box is a crate or barrel that has cold water which is usually diverted from a nearby creek and it flows into the top and then back out the bottom.
  • A spout, tap, or hose leads from the end of the worm into a bucket, usually through one last filter.
  • The end result is a clear liquid which is ready to be illegally bottled and sold.
