Ayurvedic Management and Prevention of Achalasia
Introduction
It is a disorder in which the tube connecting the mouth and the stomach, which is called Oesophagus damages and creates difficulties for the food and liquid to pass into the stomach. Oesophagus works as the food carrier from the throat to the stomach. In this situation, this tube loses its ability to crush the food down and tightens up the muscular valve between the oesophagus and the stomach. This muscular valve or ring is generally known as lower oesophageal sphincter (LES). Consequently, this LES fails to open up and leads to the storage of food within the oesophagus only, as the contraction and relaxation of LES ensures the mobility of food through the oesophagus into the stomach. It is a diversified disease, sub-divided into three categories based on its manometric patterns. These are:
- Type I (classic) with minimum contractility in the oesophageal body
- Type II with intermittent periods of oesophageal pressurization
- Type III (spastic) with premature distal oesophageal contractions.

There is no specific cause of Achalasia, it may be hereditary or the result of a condition in which the immune system of the body falsely attacks the healthy cells in the body known as an autoimmune condition, degeneration of nerves, parasitic infection called as Chagas’ disease, or any other. The oesophagus cancer may be a reason for this disease and vice versa.
