ANCA (Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody) associated vasculitis is a group of diseases characterized by the destruction and inflammation of the wall of the blood vessel that results in a variety of disorders. This disease affects about one in 50,000 people and is most prevalent in middle-aged people and Caucasian men and women.
What are the Types of ANCA Vasculitis?
ANCA vasculitis is grouped according to the organs whose vasculature is being damaged.
Renal Limited Vasculitis:
In this condition, the capillaries in the glomeruli (filtering units in the kidneys) start to swell. This hampers the functioning of kidneys and causes kidney failure. This type is known as the ANCA glomerulonephritis which is characterized by the presence of protein and blood in the urine.
Microscopic Polyangiitis:
Swelling in the vessels affects the multiple tissues and organs which include kidneys, lungs, nerves, joints, and skin. Symptoms that occur are skin lesions, inflammation in the kidneys, damaging of nerves on the affected areas.
Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis:
Patients with this condition experience swelling in the body tissues especially in the lungs, nose, kidneys, eyes, sinuses, and ears. Swelling is caused due to the formation of granulomas in the vasculature. These granulomas are the masses of the immune cells that are formed at the infectious sites. It is also called Wegener’s granulomatosis.
Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis:
EGPA is limited to the upper and lower respiratory tract. This is caused by granulomas primary which is formed by a single type of white blood cells called eosinophils.
