While the coffee, tea and beverage selection is definitely the star of the show when it comes to a cafe, pastry and baked goods are certainly a complimentary bonus.
In fact, baked goods often improve the early morning cafe experience for customers, as they munch on something sweet after a slightly bitter coffee.
Point being, it’s only beneficial for your cafe to invest in high quality baked goods, and what better choice than beloved cinnamon scrolls? Soft and light yet filling, delicately sweet yet not overly sugary, cinnamon scrolls are the perfect muchie for any Australian cafe.
Quick and Easy: How to Make Delicious Cinnamon Scrolls
First is Yeast
The making of a delicious cinnamon scroll starts with the yeast. To make and activate the yeast, combine one cup of warm milk, a quarter cup of melted butter, five tablespoons of granulated sugar and two and a half teaspoons of quick-rise yeast. You’ll need to leave the mixture to stand for ten minutes until it becomes frothy.
Making the Scrolls
After the yeast is ready, you’ll need to use it to make your scrolls. Add a whisked egg to the yeast mixture, followed by exactly three and a half cups of flour (with a dash of salt). Mix this until a soft and sticky dough forms. This dough will become the basis of your roles so it is important to knead it until it is smooth and elastic (this usually takes around two minutes). Lightly flour your kneading service to prevent the dough from sticking to your fingers and the bench top.
After your dough has been successfully kneaded, transfer it to a bowl that has been lightly sprayed with cooking oil (make sure your dough is coated in this oil). By this step, your oven should have already been preheated to 100 degrees Celsius. Turn it off and place the dough into the warm oven, and allow the dough to rise for 30 minutes.
When your dough has doubled in size, it’s time to take it out of the oven and roll it into the shape of scrolls. Cut and divide the dough however sizes you want and brush melted butter onto your pieces. Also sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over your dough. When rolling your scrolls, remember to seal the end with a gentle pinch down the seam.
Before baking your scrolls, lightly grease a baking dish, place your scrolls onto it, cover them with a damp towel and wait for them to rise for 30 minutes. While you wait for your scrolls to rise, remember to preheat your oven to 175 degrees Celsius. After your 30 minutes is up, bake your scrolls for 25 minutes, and cool them before glazing them with your icing.
Finishing with Icing
You can prepare your icing while your scrolls are rising or baking. Simply beat four ounces of cream cheese, two tablespoons of melted butter, two tablespoons of milk and one teaspoon of pure vanilla extract together until smooth and creamy. After this, add one cup of powdered sugar and beat the mixture until it is lump-free.
When your scrolls have finished baking, you can spread your icing over them and serve them to your customers.
