The Cost of IVF In India
Here are approximate costs of IVF treatments in various metro cities in India:
*All figures are based on approximate costs and are only indicative and subject to variations.
IVF in Jaipur is overall economical as compared to few other cities of India. The average cost ranges from 60,000 – 2,00,000 INR. Most couples typically end up spending around 1,20,000 INR on one cycle of IVF. If some centre is quoting a cost lower than this, it is most likely not including medicine cost in that.
Let us first understand the basic fee structure in detail.
BASIC IVF cost includes:
- The cost of injections, typically ranging between 30,000 – 70,000 INR. Cost of injections again depends on a number of factors like the type of injections (recombinant or highly purified urinary preparations), dose of injections, number of days injections are given, protocol used for ovarian stimulation. The choice of injections is made by the doctor and depends on a number of factors like age of the patient, previous response to stimulation, baseline scan characteristics and baseline hormone evaluation.
2. The cost of procedure, around 35,000 -75,000 INR. This includes hospital and OT charges, anaesthesia charges, embryologist charges, procedure disposables and consumables, incubation and culturing of embryos for 3 days.
3. Other charges including consultation, ultrasounds, blood investigations, etc.
ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES:
- Blastocyst culture: here embryos are cultured for 5-6 days inside incubator. This might cost an additional 10-20,000 INR.
2. Freezing/ cryopreservation: preserving extra embryos for additional chances may cost 15 -25,000 INR.
3. LASER assisted hatching (LAH): This is required for selective cases like those with advanced age or frozen embryos with thick zona or previous 3 failure cycles.
4. Hysteroscopy/ laparoscopy: this might be required in a few cases where uterine cavity is suspected to have some minor abnormalities like polyp or fibroid which may decrease the success rates of IVF.
5. Other procedures for poor uterine lining like endokine insertion, PRP instillation, endometrium scratching may also incur extra charges.
6. E.S.A./ P.E.S.A: Some cases where there is obstructive azoospermia or when the sperms are formed inside the testis of a male but fail to come out through semen due to some obstruction, surgical sperm retrieval or TESA/ PESA is performed. The cost of T.E.S.A is generally between 12,000 and 20,000 INR. It offers the advantage of using self sperms to the couple.
7. Cost Of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) For IVF Treatments In this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg and this considerably increases the chance of a successful fertilization. The cost of ICSI can range from 15,000 to 25,000 rupees.
8. IMSI/ PICSI/ EMBRYOSCOPE: these are offered by selected centres to selected patients only but incur additional cost.
9. Donor eggs: here eggs are procured from some other lady. As the donor is commercial, so it involves an additional cost varying from 30,000 -50,000 INR extra. REMEMBER THAT NOT EVERYONE NEEDS DONOR EGGS. One must atleast try with self eggs before taking a decision to proceed with donor eggs. Although there are a few couples who may need donors straightaway. Those are women with age > 40 years, post menopausal, very low AMH (<0.5 ng/mL)
10. Donor sperms: for men with zero sperm counts (azoospermia) or with severe abnormalities in sperms.
OTHER FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE COST OF IVF
1. Women’s Age & Number of Treatment cycles
A woman’s age is one of the most important factors in determining the success of an IVF treatment.
2. Cost Of Frozen Embryo Transfer For IVF Treatments
This is done in cases of extra embryos, too many embryos leading to risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), poor endometrium (lining of uterus), some doctors prefer a freeze all policy. In selected cases, this may improve chances of success. The cost of a frozen embryo transfer (FET) can be anywhere between 20,000 and 35,000 INR.
3. SURROGACY: It may involve an additional 1.5 to 3.0 lakhs.
While IVF treatments may seem expensive, they are fairly reasonable considering the sophisticated and advanced medical technology involved, and the expertise of the doctors. Besides, when it comes to having your own baby, any couple who has undergone the treatment will tell you, it’s certainly worth it!
