Complete guide to Procedure of IVF:
There are seven stages for the preparation of IVF:
- Preparation of IVF:
It is a process that involves medical testing and psychic preparation for the couple. In this stage, the doctors perform legit tests on the body of the patient to check that there is no blockage in the fallopian tubes or disorder that require surgical repair.
Apart from that, the couple is tested for sexually transmitted diseases, ovarian reserve, assessment of the thyroid gland function, semen analysis, and more.
After all the tests, the patient is prepared for the treatment. It might take around one to four months to prepare a patient for IVF depending on their medical condition.
- Ovarian Stimulation:
As the fertilization takes place artificially, so the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries. For the retrieval, eggs must be mature. Irrespective of the menstruation cycle, if it is normal or not, the doctor provides you with the stimulation drugs. It is because the results of IVF are better with a higher number of eggs. In general, 10 to 20 eggs are retrieved during an IVF cycle. All the oocytes that are removed are not helpful, only two-third of the eggs are useful.
The doctor makes the dosage of the drugs and specification based on your health condition to get the maximum number of useful eggs.
- Retrieval of Eggs and Sperm:
After giving a trigger shot to the patient, the egg is retrieved from the ovaries within a span of 36 hours. The egg is removed before the ovulation. It is usually a surgical procedure. The ovaries are removed one by one with an image-guided process. At the same time, sperms are collected from the male partner.
- Artificial Fertilisation:
The eggs and sperms are now examined in the laboratory. Fully matured are used for the fertilization process. The process of fertilization is initiated within three to four hours of the retrieval of eggs.
- Assisted Hatching:
This process is used for couples with failed IVF or older age. In this process, the cells are introduced to form a membrane to protect the early embryo. There is no proof that it improves the chances of pregnancy, yet the results with assisted hatching are always satisfactory.
- Transfer of Embryo:
The eggs fertilize to form an embryo within 5 to 6 days of fertilization. Multiple embryos are then transplanted to the womb. If there are a higher number of embryos then some are preserved for the next IVF cycle.
- Pregnancy Test:
To analyze the result of the overall procedure, the pregnancy test is performed on the patient after 10 to 12 days.
