Things You Need To Know About Dandruff, Its Causes, And The Products Which Can Treat It
What is dandruff?
Dandruff refers to medium to large flakes of dead skin on your face, scalp or other parts of your body. Dandruff happens when the normal cell-renewal process of the skin gets disrupted due to microbes.
What causes it?
Malassezia furfur is a fat-loving fungus which fosters in environments with overactive sebaceous glands, and feeds on the oils the skin produces. It is the most common cause of dandruff. However, other kinds of bacteria and fungi can also cause dandruff. Hormonal imbalance, poor health and hygiene, allergies, and, improper nutrition are among the internal factors which can contribute to dandruff. Yeast can also cause dandruff, as can illnesses.
How does it happen?
Scalp imbalance causes sebaceous glands to secrete a lot of oil, which allows the fat-friendly fungi to replicate quickly. This interferes with the skin’s natural cycle, and causes itching. As a result, the skin’s cell turnover happens too quickly, and the oils from the oil glands bind these flakes which are churned out, leading to clumpy dandruff.
What doesn’t cause dandruff?
Dandruff is not caused by lice, as many self-proclaimed healers will claim. It is also not infectious, unless someone with dandruff scratches their own head, and then scratches yours.
Why does it happen?
Extreme weather conditions, and lack of sun exposure can cause dandruff. This is because sunlight kills yeast and dandruff-causing fungi. This is also the reason dandruff happens in the winter, and in humid, cloudy weather more commonly.
Excessive use of hair gels, harsh shampoos, hair sprays and hair colour can also trigger dandruff.
Overwashing and underwashing hair can also cause scalp-oil imbalance, leading to dandruff.
Skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis commonly cause dandruff.
It is a common myth that poor hygiene cannot cause dandruff. This is not true. Fungi grow easily in dirty environments, so hygiene is an important factor, though not the primary one. Plus, not shampooing hair properly, can lead to excess buildup, which can cause dandruff.
How can we treat it?
Dandruff can be counteracted with adequate sun exposure, and anti-fungal treatments.
Combing or brushing the scalp regularly helps prevent dandruff by aiding the scalp’s ability to prevent dead skin from accumulating.
Skin imbalance and dryness often happen due to inadequate hydration. So drink water, especially coconut water, because that can really help restore balance to your skin.
